Abstract

ABSTRACT

The acceleration of natural resource exploitation within national and global development agendas has increasingly generated environmental conflicts that extend beyond ecological concerns to encompass social and political dimensions. One prominent case is the opposition to nickel mining activities in Raja Ampat Regency, Southwest Papua, which has been articulated through the #Save Raja Ampat campaign. This study aims to analyze how the campaign operates as an environmental political message and how collective identity is politicized in the process of resistance against extractive state policies. Employing a qualitative approach, this research utilizes literature review and political message analysis. The main analytical framework is the concept of politicized collective identity proposed by Simon and Klandermans, which emphasizes three stages of identity politicization: collective grievance awareness, adversarial attribution, and the involvement of broader publics through triangulation. The findings indicate that the #Save Raja Ampat campaign not only represents opposition to nickel mining but also frames environmental conflict as an issue of ecological justice, indigenous rights, and unequal power relations between the state, corporations, and local communities. Campaign messages function to build collective awareness, symbolically identify opposing actors, and mobilize broader public support through arenas of political communication. This study concludes that environmental messages play a strategic role in mediating extractivist conflicts and transforming local issues into publicly contested political debates. Theoretically, this research contributes to the field of environmental political communication by highlighting the central role of collective identity in the analysis of environmental movement messaging.
